While heavy motorcycle models often provide extra stability out on the road, they aren’t always the easiest bikes to maneuver. If you’ve recently purchased a pretty heavy motorcycle, you may be a bit overwhelmed by how difficult it can be to simply take a ride down the street. However, there’s no need to worry. With our helpful tips below and a bit of practice, you’ll be speeding down the highway with your new motorcycle in no time!

Use Your Rear Brake

Learning to maneuver a heavy motorcycle can require a bit of practice, and we advise keeping to city streets and local roads until you’ve got the hang of things. As you practice, try to avoid using your front-hand brake, especially at slower speeds. Because heavy models have so much weight to them, they’re much more likely to flip forward, and it's much safer to use your rear brake instead.

Rider Position

Controlling a heavy motorcycle will require a little more effort on your behalf. A great way to ensure you don’t overexert yourself too quickly is to use the best riding position available. This means keeping elbows tucked in and your back and head straight and upright. This will not only help you keep balance on your vehicle, but it will also help increase your control of the handlebars. When turning, it can also help to stick your right or left foot out, depending on the direction you’re going, to allow you to better lean into a turn without losing your balance.
