Riding Your Motorcycle in the Mountains
Taking your motorcycle on a ride through the mountains can be fun, exciting, and a great way to take in some beautiful scenery. But riding in the mountains takes some special care to ensure that your trip is safe. Fortunately for you, we’ve created the following guide with tips for motorcycle riding in the mountains. Read on to learn more, and call North County Indian Motorcycle® at one of our locations in San Marcos, or Corona, California with questions. We are proud to serve San Diego and Oceanside.
Check Conditions in Advance
Before you hit the road, check out the weather forecast and the traffic report for the route you plan on taking. Keep in mind that fog, rain, snow, and ice can make for a dangerous motorcycle ride through the mountains. Even if the skies look clear, the temperature is going to drop as you increase in elevation. Keep your eyes open for any changing conditions.
Traffic is also going to vary on mountain roads depending on the season. If you go at a popular time, you’re going to be trudging up the mountain on your bike. You’ll also need to check if any roads on your route are closed due to landslides.
Dress for the Heights
As we mentioned before, the temperature is going to drop when you get higher in the mountains. This means you need to dress for the weather. Wind chills can make a big difference on your motorcycle ride. When riding in the mountains, dress in warm layers so you’re prepared for the cooler temperatures. Even riding in fog can make you colder.
Stay Alert
One of the most important things you can do when riding your motorcycle in the mountains is to stay alert. We know the scenery is beautiful, but it’s still crucial that you pay attention to the road. Drop-offs, exposed rock faces, curves, and switchbacks can make for a dangerous ride if you’re not careful.
Take corners as wide as possible while staying in your lane so you can see around the curve for oncoming traffic. Keep in mind that other drivers may not be experienced in driving in the mountains, so they may fail to hit their brakes in time. Watch your mirrors for any traffic behind you.
Wind conditions are also going to increase as you get higher in the mountains. Be aware of these powerful winds and be prepared to adjust your riding.
